James Cooper Mansion

Client: Tridel
Architect: Burka Architects Inc.

To maximize the use of this relatively small site required moving the 800-ton, 1882 James Cooper Mansion 100 metres north and constructing a parking garage below it. Sigmund Soudack's engineers proposed an economical and straightforward solution: a concrete slab was laid on grade, the heritage mansion was moved onto an on-grade raft slab, and then excavation proceeded below. The move was billed as the largest structural move of a single-family home in Canada's history.
